Many children struggle with reading and often don’t like doing it because of that, according to grant applicant and Reading Specialist, Dr. Lisa Surkovich. Which is why she applied for a grant to update the small group reading room with flexible seating. Dr. Surkovich works with readers at all grade levels at C.W. Longer Elementary and envisioned a more comfortable and welcoming space that would encourage more reading and focused attention.

Featured above are “wobble chairs” which promote movement while seated. This movement helps kids focus by giving them an outlet for their energy. The reading room grant also provided bean bags, floor seats and balance balls. However, due to COVID precautions were not able to be used; the additional flexible seating will be added for the 2021-22 school year.
